The Metabolism of Sulfur

چکیده

The extent of the oxidation of the sulfur of the amino acid, cystine, by the animal organism has been the subject of frequent study (1, 2). It has been shown that the sulfur of cystine administered in moderate quantities is oxidized readily and excreted in bhe urine chiefly as sulfate sulfur. Variable recoveries of the sulfur of cystine when fed are frequently obtained, owing presumably to t,he ready decomposition of cystine by the intestinal microflora with the formaCon of hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans. It has also been observed that, if the a-amino group of cystine is blocked by some chemical group which prevents ready deamination in the organism (i.e. acetyl, benzoyl, etc.), the oxidation of the sulfur of the molecule is prevented to a very considerable extent (2-5). Our knowledge of the conditions for the oxidation of methionine, 6he second amino acid containing sulfur present in the protein molecule, is not extensive. Mueller (6), who first isolated methionine as a product of the hydrolysis of protein, observed in a limited series of experiments a ready oxidation of the sulfur of small quantities of methionine when fed to man. Pirie (7), after administering I-methionine equivalent to 320 mg. of sulfur to dogs, was able to recover 79 to 86 per cent of the sulfur fed as “extra” sulfur in the urine. A similar ready oxidation of the sulfur of dl-methionine by the dog has been not,ed by White and Lewis (8) and by Stekol and Schmidt (9).

Biochemical properties and biological functions of the enzyme rhodanese in domestic animals

The enzyme rhodanese (thiosulfate: cyanide sulfurtransferase) is a ubiquitous enzyme and its activity ispresent in all living organisms. Many functions including cyanide detoxification, formation of iron-sulfurcenters and participation in energy metabolism have been attributed to this enzyme. The enzyme catalyzesthe transfer of a sulfur atom from sulfane containing compounds (such as thiosulfat...

Study the effect of environmental factors and different carbon sources on dibenzothiophene desulfurization by Exophiala spinifera

It is necessary to reduce the amount of sulfur in fossil fuels due to direct impact of the quality of these fuels on the environment. In this research, a novel fungus strain of Exophiala spinifera, namely FM, was used to desulfurize dibenzothiophene (DBT) as a model cyclic sulfur compounds in oil and fossil fuels. HPLC analysis indicated that the fungus was capable of reducing 99% of DBT concen...

Facile Synthesis of N, S-Doped Graphene from Sulfur Trioxide Pyridine Precursor for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

In the work presented here, nitrogen and sulfur co doped on porous graphene was synthesized using pyrolysis at 900°C for 2h and the hydrothermal technique at 180°C for 24h as metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under alkaline conditions. All the materials have been characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreov...

Sulfur Metabolism Pathways in Sulfobacillus acidophilus TPY, A Gram-Positive Moderate Thermoacidophile from a Hydrothermal Vent

Sulfobacillus acidophilus TPY, isolated from a hydrothermal vent in the Pacific Ocean, is a moderately thermoacidophilic Gram-positive bacterium that can oxidize ferrous iron or sulfur compounds to obtain energy. In this study, comparative transcriptomic analyses of S. acidophilus TPY were performed under different redox conditions. Based on these results, pathways involved in sulfur metabolism...

Sulfur Metabolism in Enterobacteria 145 Sulfur Metabolism in Escherichia coli and Related Bacteria: Facts and Fiction

Living organisms are composed of macromolecules made of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. Much work has been devoted to the metabolism of the first five elements, but much remains to be understood about sulfur metabolism. We review here the situation in Escherichia coli and related bacteria, where more than one hundred genes involved in sulfur metabolism have already be...

Metatranscriptomic Analysis of Sulfur Oxidation Genes in the Endosymbiont of Solemya Velum

Thioautotrophic endosymbionts in the Domain Bacteria mediate key sulfur transformations in marine reducing environments. However, the molecular pathways underlying symbiont metabolism and the extent to which these pathways are expressed in situ are poorly characterized for almost all symbioses. This is largely due to the difficulty of culturing symbionts apart from their hosts. Here, we use pyr...
